Charlie grew up in Wallsend where The Last Ship is set. Her father, mother and a brace of uncles all worked in the shipyards.
Charlie played Val Pollard in ITV’s Emmerdale from 2004 to 2015, where she won several industry awards, including British Soap Awards for Best Comedy Performance and Best Episode. Other TV includes: four years as Sian in Byker Grove, EastEnders, Casualty, Our
Friends in the North, The Royal, See You Friday, The Tide of Life, Colour Blind and Different for Girls.

Charlie plays Iris Reed in the World War I series Home Front (BBC Radio 4); has been a regular on Loose Women, a presenter for BBC TV and Radio, and sings in a brilliant band of women called Kissed.
